Stock wells: designed around the herd, not the house

A stock well earns its keep on reliability, so the design choices lean that direction: storage capacity ahead of demand so animals drink by gravity through a failure, float systems that cannot stick open and drain a tank overnight and pump sizing that respects both the herd and the sand the well draws from. For pasture beyond practical power, solar pumping with storage has become the honest recommendation, priced at $3,500 to $9,000 for panel, pump and tank on the published table.

What does a stock well for a cattle place cost?

Livestock wells run $8,000 to $20,000 on the published table. A modest herd well on decent sand sits at the low end; bigger bores and high-volume pumps push toward the top. The design starts from head count and trough layout, not from a standard package.

Is solar really dependable enough for stock water?

With storage, yes. The panel pumps all day into a storage tank and the tank carries the herd through night and weather. For pasture a half mile from power, solar plus storage routinely beats the cost of trenching electric line, and the operating cost afterward is zero.

How big does an irrigation well need to be?

It is a gallons-per-minute question answered from acreage, crop and delivery method. Pivot irrigation wants hundreds of gallons per minute from a large-diameter bore; a garden and orchard place wants a fraction of that. We run the sizing math with your numbers before anything gets priced, because oversizing wastes capital and undersizing wastes a season.

Our old irrigation well has lost capacity. Rehab or redrill?

Test first. Capacity loss can be a worn pump, a plugging screen or a declining water level, and each has a different fix at a different price. Rework runs $3,000 to $8,000 when the casing is sound; when it is not, we show the redrill math next to the rehab math and the operation picks.
